If the thought of orthodontia makes you think of stainless steel brackets and wires, we would love to tell you about Invisalign. Designed for teens and adults with mild to moderately crowded teeth, Invisalign will straighten your teeth faster and more easily than traditional braces, with a less-visible mechanism than the “metal-mouth” you remember from long ago.

At Tempe Family Dental, we want you to look and feel your best. If you suffer from mild to moderate malocclusion, the Invisalign system may be a way for you to find your best smile. How Invisalign Works

Rather than attach brackets and wires to your teeth, Invisalign provides BPA-free translucent plastic aligners that fit over your teeth and gently apply pressure. Each aligner slowly alters the position of your teeth to a specific point. You will wear an aligner for two weeks, for approximately 20 hours per day. During each two-week period, your teeth will shift between .25 to .33 millimeters until the desired outcome is achieved. Crowded teeth become more evenly spaced over a period of 6-18 months, depending on individual treatment plans.

Invisalign is different from other orthodontic therapies because the aligners can be removed at any time. Many people have always wanted straighter teeth, but didn't want to commit to stainless steel in their smile for two full years. Invisalign will give you the freedom to remove your aligners for occasional photographs, business meetings, social events, etc.

This system is not meant to be worn when you eat or drink, and will not interfere with your usual brushing and flossing routine, or six-month dental appointments. During the course of treatment, you will need to visit the dentist periodically to check progress, but you will not have monthly appointments for tightening wires, which is required with traditional braces. Aligners can be sent to your home or picked up at our office, at a time of your choosing.

Who can use Invisalign?

Invisalign is an excellent option for anyone who is motivated to see their smile improve through minor to moderate realignment of the teeth. Since success is based on voluntarily wearing the aligners for most of the day and night, you will only see results as long as you adhere faithfully to the treatment plan.

An Invisalign treatment plan is most effective with teeth suffering from mild to moderate crowding—a condition that can make your smile appear “busy” and make flossing and brushing less effective. Invisalign is only for adults and older teens; traditional braces are still the best option for children, whose teeth and facial bones are growing. Bracket-and-wire braces are also recommended for anyone whose teeth need rotation within their sockets, or to address problems with bite, such as overbite, under bite, or cross bite.

This orthodontic system is an excellent choice for patients who wore braces as a child, but whose teeth have begun to shift back into misalignment. In as little as six months, your teeth can reclaim the same harmony and balance achieved by your first orthodontic treatment.

Why Invisalign?

As a fairly recent development in orthodontic treatments, Invisalign was introduced less than 20 years ago. In the past, many people would not have considered braces, due to their obvious and intrusive appearance, which we tend to associate with adolescence. But now that orthodontic treatment can be discreet and subtle, there is no reason why you can't have your teeth realigned for a more attractive smile.

Beyond appearance, Invisalign offers several benefits that make it a good choice. Invisalign treatment plans can usually be completed in less time than traditional braces; involve fewer trips to the dentist's office; and offer a level of flexibility that will not affect your eating or brushing/flossing habits. Since aligners are removed before eating, you also need not worry about food sticking to wires or accidentally knocking a bracket loose.
